1953 -
Helen has always been interested in ecological restoration and has been working on weeds since 1995, initially for Wellington Regional Council and now with the Department of Conservation (DOC). Her current role is in giving technical support on weeds issues to field staff and to managers. She has also been involved in developing DOC’s standard operating procedures for weed control work, particularly around surveillance and the early detection and control of new invasive weed species.
Helen believes that it is very important to involve everyone in stopping the spread of weedy species, so has been an enthusiastic supporter of the Weedbusters (www.weedbusters.org.nz) weed awareness initiative. As part of her role with Weedbusters, Helen coordinated the Plant Me Instead booklet for Canterbury and Otago. This booklet gives examples of native and exotic plant species that can be used to replace a range of weedy species that people may find in their garden.![]()
